I think it has to be spent on science outreach activities, so my plan is to use it to buy kit to make the touring lecture I give to schools more exciting. I’m a nuclear physicist, so I talk about all sorts of facts about and uses of nuclear physics, from studying climate change, to nuclear power, to curing cancer, to how stars burn. For quite a lot of these things, I can buy samples of the materials that are studied so that people can have a look. Although it wouldn’t cost a great deal, I’d pick up a bag of “Lo-Salt” from the supermarket. It’s actually pretty radioactive, so I’d like to show people that, with a geiger counter – It goes to show that there radioactivity in all sorts of things and that low levels are not harmful at all.

Teaching rocks and fossils can’t really be done without samples to get your hands on, but enough good stuff for a class is expensive. So I’d like to help build up a good set of samples for local schools outreach.

Yep – see my profile! I’d like you guys to decide what I should do with the money. Either I could use it in my work to go to a cancer conference in the states to help further knowledge about new drugs. Or I would donate it to Breakthrough breast cancer, who are a charity that specialise in lab research into cancer…. (I no longer work behind the lab bench so don’t do that myself). Let me know what you think it should go on…

I would like to be able to take some stem cells out to schools to run a workshop. I never got to do a lot of experiments when I was at school so I would like to give others that opportunity. The money would allow me to develop lots more hands on activities and be able to go to lots of schools!

I’d probably work with some of our colleagues in the Art department to make something we could take into schools to help people understand computers better. I’d be keen to know what /you/ would like the money spent on though. What would you like to know about?
