      I think it was discovering how to test models of the nuclear force between protons and neutrons based on what sort of neutron stars they would predict, then comparing that to actually observed neutron stars. Neutron stars are basically just enormous nuclei (and have protons as well as neutrons, despite their name) and it was great to be able to calculate the properties of both enormous stars and tiny nuclei at the same time
