£500 would not be enough to fund my research, it takes a LOT of money to do that. Luckily our lab is funded by the Medical Research Council (www.mrc.ac.uk if you want to have a look at what they do). We also get money from some charities to help fund our work.
The money we get to fund the lab has to be spent on specific things, like equipment and reagents (ingredients) for my experiments, as well as to pay my wages! There is never enough left over so the £500 from this competition would enable us to do more exciting things with you guys in schools and actually get to show you what all the money that we do get from charities and the government pays for. Hope that makes sense!

The money from this if I was lucky enough to win in
